The inaugural $50,000 prize awards aim to expand open access book publishing in the humanities.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is happy to announce the 2024 ACLS Open Access Book Prizes and Arcadia Open Access Publishing Awards recipients. These prizes, funded by Arcadia, recognize and reward the authors and publishers of remarkable, innovative, and open access humanities books released between 2017 and 2022.

Each prize winner was chosen by a distinguished team of judges from a shortlist of five candidates. The winning authors receive a monetary prize of $20,000, while the winning publishers receive a grant of $30,000 to facilitate the instant open access publication of at least two new books.

The prizes, which are among the highest for scholarly publications, were revealed today at the ACLS Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.

"ACLS is proud to award these outstanding authors and publishers, whose commitment to open access is helping transform the way scholarly insights reach people inside and outside the academy," Joy Connolly, president of ACLS, said in a "Their publications freely supply communities worldwide with correct knowledge on areas that have historically and often purposely been kept on the outside of academic investigation. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Arcadia to create an ecosystem in which humanistic publications can thrive among a bigger audience.

For almost a century, ACLS has promoted the creation and dissemination of knowledge that increases our understanding of mankind and human efforts. Amplifying humanistic scholarship through initiatives like the ACLS Open Access Books Prizes contributes to the development of a twenty-first-century ecology in which humanistic publications can flourish.

The ACLS Open Access Book Prizes and Arcadia Open Access Publishing Awards for 2025 will accept submissions beginning in May 2024. Sign up to receive updates on the prize and notifications when the competition opens.
